Scrolling Past Scott's BYOD Beach Invite?

Yeah, We Drove 2.5 Hours and It Was Worth Every Mile.

Jen, March 2026

Have you ever been working from home and thought, look at that sunshine… I should be outside.

But you’re not a landscaper, so working outside isn’t really an option.

You go back to that project proposal and think, later on I should head down to the beach.

But then you get back to being focused and productive, and before you know it the day is gone… and so are your hopes and dreams of going to the beach.

If only you could just work from the beach, then you could do both at once. How insanely productive would that be? What started as a dream of an evening walk could become a whole day of beach and work.

But, like many of our dreams, reality kicks in.
You can’t exactly plonk a desk on the beach. That’s weird.
And what about power?
Wi-Fi?

Eventually you talk yourself out of it, dump the idea in your 'don’t be ridiculous' folder, and stay home.

Then one day you’re scrolling Instagram and you see a post from Scott Muirhead.

You’ve been following Scott for a while because he’s hilarious.

Scott has an old-school desk and takes it to increasingly ridiculous places, once right to the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific, always holding a sign that says:

“Make remote work remote”

But this time he’s holding a different sign:

BYOD (Bring Your Own Desk)
Friday, Law Street Beach
9–12

Wait… what?!

You read it again and realise your dream might just become a reality.

So you do what any rational person would do:

pack up your WFH Desk, grab your laptop, and drive 2.5 hours from LA to San Diego.

When you arrive, there are more than 100 people there. People just like you, who’ve clearly had the exact same dream.

Laptops on beach towels, garden tables in the sand, surfboards propped up on boxes.

Coffee, donuts, pizza.

At one point one of your new “beach colleagues” shuts her laptop, grabs her surfboard — or “desktop” — and heads into the waves.

And suddenly you’re having the best work day ever.

This epic workday was the brainchild of Scott Muirhead.

Dressed in a shirt, tie, and board shorts, he’s the ultimate remote worker.

He parks his desk at a gym, a movie theatre, a nail salon.

He’s even spent the day working in a cat café. In the final shot of that reel he leaves the café, politely thanking the nice people, carrying his desk… and a kitten.

It’s genius.

And yes, Scott does actually have a real job, he’s just taking it to some of the best spots in San Diego.

A former D-1 hooper originally from Texas, Scott moved to Southern California in 2025.

One of his Instagram photo dumps reassures his dad that he’s:
Eating well, driving safe, still talking to my sister, and slowly turning into the California hippie he was afraid I’d become.

We’ve been enjoying Scott’s adventures for a while now and always wonder where he’ll go next, so when we heard he was inviting people to join him, we jumped at the chance.

The sun was hot, the vibe was ridiculously happy, and for a few hours, work felt exactly like the thing it’s supposed to support — life.

No matter what the haters say...we’re pretty sure they were just annoyed because they had to go into the office.

CBS8 showed up too.
See how they covered the sand-office madness.
