We've created a new design of standing desks for our online store. The Lambda desk is a sleek, modern narrow desk that makes a stylish choice in sustainable home office furniture. But are standing desks a good idea? And why did we opt to design them over sitting desks?
Thoughtful, inspiring design
The Lambda Standing Desk is not our first foray into standing desk manufacture. Our flagship design, the WFH Desk, is one of the top standing desks available online. It has several particular design aspects specifically intended to benefit those who suddenly found themselves working from home during the pandemic.
When approaching the design, our team knew that the WFH Desk would have to be flat-packed so that a courier could deliver it to your door. We also considered that lockdowns meant that some people might not already have tools at home and wouldn't be able to go and purchase them. So we designed the desk to assemble without using tools, nuts or bolts.
Both design aspects ensured customers could get set up and working with an ergonomic, stylish and functional workspace at home as quickly and easily as possible.
And as a final comment on design, we ensured that the WFH Desk could pack down flat for easy storage underneath a bed or sofa. This was especially convenient for those who needed to work from home but didn't have space to permanently dedicate to a home office.
Sit or stand? Or both?
Not long after the initial launch of the WFH Desk, we introduced a range of modules and accessories that allow you to set up your workstation in a way that is specific to your home and how you like to work - in essence, to create a custom standing desk.
This included items such as top shelves, laptop lifter wings, hooks, corner modules and bookshelves.
In addition to being fully customisable, the beauty of the WFH Desk was the ability to set it up to work sitting or standing. We did follow up with a WFH Sitting Desk, but the original desk was perfect for those that perhaps didn't want to commit to working standing up full time.
While the new Lambda Standing Desk is not customisable, we did take several learnings away from designing the WFH Desk that we've used to create our new standing desk.
Ergonomic, height-adjustable, stylish
WFH Desk customers liked the modern, minimalist style of the desk, so this was an aspect of the design that we wanted to translate to the Lambda Standing Desk. Style-wise, it's clean, sleek and simple.
Like its predecessor, the Lambda Standing Desk assembles without using tools; however, it's without the constraints of needing to pack down flat. Now that hybrid or full-time remote working has been embraced by a lot of companies following the recent pandemic, the Lambda Standing Desk is designed to be a permanent feature in your home office workspace.
This allowed our design team to increase the weight of the desk, using more premium, EPA-certified birchwood timber in the design.
A cool feature of the new desk is the innovative lift-to-adjust desktop mechanism. You can quickly and easily change the desktop to one of four heights to match your ergonomic profile, unlike the WFH Desk, which requires partial disassembly to reposition the desktop.
With the Lambda Standing Desk we've also given you the choice of three widths - 600mm, 800mm and 1,200mm - and the Lambda Standing Desk is available with a Satin Birch finish.
So now that you understand the thought process behind the design of both our desk ranges, let's explore why we focused on standing desks.
If you're considering a standing desk for the home office, this will answer a few of the most commonly asked questions, and help you determine which standing desk to buy.
Are standing desks good for you?
Perhaps the main reason anyone would choose a standing desk is the purported health benefits. Using a standing desk throughout your workday encourages regular movement.
Not only do standing desks help you to keep moving throughout the day, which is better for your body, but studies have shown that this movement may also help you maintain focus and productivity.
However, while sitting has been dubbed the 'modern-day smoking', standing all day in one spot can be equally bad for your health.
How to stand properly at a standing desk
To help combat the fatigue that may come from standing in one spot all day, we have designed a range of 'Movement & Health' products that include the Move Board - a balance board for standing desks - and the Move Box - a plyometric box for standing desks.
Using one or both of these two products in conjunction with a standing desk will help you to achieve a greater range of movement and allow you to adjust your body frequently in ways that are supportive and intuitive to how your body wants to move.
Additionally, you'll want to ensure that your desktop is set up at the correct ergonomic height for your body. To create an ergonomic setup when standing, adjust the desktop height so that your arms bend comfortably at the elbows at a 90° angle. Your forearms should be parallel with the desktop and your wrists should remain flat, never inclined up or down when using your keyboard.
You should also ensure that your neck is straight and shoulders relaxed, with the screen you use most often positioned directly in front of you, the top of the monitor in line with your eyes.
How long can you stand at a standing desk?
Given that you have an ergonomic and height-adjustable desk set up for your profile, you should be able to work at a standing desk daily and for a full day of work.
To avoid fatigue, take short, regular breaks from work. For example, you can employ a product from the 'Movement & Health' range to encourage regular position changes or schedule stops to do a few quick exercises at your desk.
Ultimately, it's down to your preference for how you work at a standing desk and what feels best for your body.
We hope that this article has clarified the benefits of a standing desk and the thought we've put into attempting to design the best standing desks on the market.
